A new report commissioned by the Australian Senate and written by Australian think-tank The Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration argued that if nothing is done there is “a high likelihood of human civilization coming to an end.”
This is the plain truth of the path we are on. The report examined a 2050 scenario based on the current trajectory of trends. In other words, the scenario assumes policy-makers fail to act on the Paris Agreement and CO2 emissions don't peak until 2030, locking in a temperature rise of 3 degrees on average by 2050.
This is a 'hothouse' earth scenario, and it is not even the most extreme. Crop yields fall by 20%, wildfires rage, oceans drown coastal cities and heat deaths skyrocket. Economic and social turmoil follows.
“This scenario provides a glimpse into a world of ‘outright chaos’ on a path to the end of human civilization and modern society as we have known it, in which the challenges to global security are simply overwhelming and political panic becomes the norm.”
The national security consequences are severe, including armed conflict, nuclear war and complete chaos.
